Facebook Changes in 2018 and What it Means for Your Business

Earlier this month, Mark Zuckerberg announced Facebook would be changing its news feed algorithm to make space for content from friends, family, and groups. 

This sparked a lot of concern among brands and businesses to rely on Facebook to communicate with their customers.  

This is what he said: 

“As we roll this out,” Zuckerberg said, “You’ll see less public content like posts from businesses, brands, and media. And the public content you see more will be held to the same standard—it should encourage meaningful interactions between people.”

Zuckerberg says “a responsibility to make sure our services aren’t just fun to use, but also good for people’s well-being” 

So basically what he is saying is that businesses and brands are going to have to work harder than ever to gain attention from their customers on Facebook. 

Over the next few months during this rollout, you can expect to see a significant decrease in organic traffic and users may be spending  less time on the platform 

How Can You continue to reach customers on Facebook? 

While it’s hard to tell exactly how this will impact our news feeds in the future, there are certainly ways in which you can work with the new algorithm and continue to reach customers through “meaningful interactions”.

What does this mean? 

- it means posting quality content that is engaging and prompts comments.

How do you do this exactly? 

When posting content it’s smart to create content that sparks conversations among your customers. Try using questions or write about timely and relevant topics that your audience might have an opinion on. 

In a nutshell - users are more than likely going to be able to see your posts if their friends and family are posting on it. 

However, whatever you do, don’t do click-bait! 

Engagement-Bait is asking your followers to “COMMENT BELOW” if you love Dogs!!! - for example. 

But don’t do it. It’s classed as “spammy” and users don’t like it.

Facebook says, “Using ‘engagement-bait’ to goad people into commenting on posts is not a meaningful interaction, and we will continue to demote these posts in News Feed.”

However, Still Encourage Customers To Follow Your Facebook Page! 

One thing that will not change is the ability for users to make sure they always see posts from their favorite Pages by choosing the “See First” option in their news feed preferences.


So, don’t be shy about asking your audience to LIKE your page on Facebook. In fact, remind them about the “See First” option so they never miss a post.
